There are not many producers bottling Schiava Gentile by itself and so we don’t have much opportunity to understand its true potential. Instead we see the grape used as a blending component where it contributes light red fruit characteristics such as cherry, cranberry, strawberry and red currant. Grown predominantly Durante the Alpine foothills of northern Italy it’s of little surprise to note that acidity is high and floral perfumes are prominent.

Alois Lageder is a leading biodynamic producer Con Italy who has for many years experimented with viticulture in juxtaposition to climate change. Beginning with the 2018 vintage, the winery engaged Con longer skin contact during the vinification of this wine because it had proven to slightly lower the alcohol levels.

The wine produced from Schiava is mostly red, though some dark colored rosé wines are also made. Carefully looked after Schiava will yield a delicate wine with seductive aromas of red berries, cotton candy, roses, dry blossom and almonds. By means of its aggraziato acid-fruit balance the Schiava manages to be surprisingly complex and profound.

Because of the longer skin contact, the wine is more complex and has more savory notes than the typical fresh and fruity Schiava from the region.

Schiava is a light-bodied red wine (like Pinot Noir) with aromas of cotton candy, strawberry, bubblegum, and lemonhead candy. The wine is delicate and light Per mezzo di color. On the palate, the flavors are quite subtle and producers in Alto Adige will often make a dry style as to not overwhelm the palate with sweetness, which is already provided by the aromas.
